News 8/25/10

(Photo of all around kick ass singer and civil rights maven Nina Simone by Roland Godefroy)

  • Homophobic Putz loses bid for Governor of Florida. Bill McCollum is the hatenozzle who paid George "long stroke" Rekers over $100,000 to testify in court to keep gay adoption illegal. (Via Joe My God.) McCollum's loss in the GOP primary means the Democratic candidate will go toe-to-toe with some other hate-filled scuzzwad.

  • John "Where's my Gin!?" McCain defeats JD Hayworth in Arizona. Lisa Murkowski and Tea Party candidate Joe Miller still too close to call in Alaska. Nate Silver did some super live blogging last night covering the primaries. He will certainly have up-to-date coverage and analysis this morning.

  • Carlos A. Ball over at Huffpo: "Without factual support for their arguments, it is becoming less and less tenable for opponents of same-sex marriage to argue that their positions are not influenced by a dislike of gay people and their intimate relationships." His whole essay is worth reading and, for the record, I still think Jonathan Rauch is wrongedy-wrong-wrong.

  • Wyoming couple brings federal suit against that state's law barring marriage equality. Good luck guys.

  • President appears on telly today with the ladies of The View. Stage fright not an issue.

  • Who is Elisabeth Hasselbeck and why is she such an idiot? Try this one on for size: "I think people turn out straight because they're not cute enough to be gay." Does that statement insult straight people? You decide.

(I feel bad for the squirrel with a broken arm, but... Damn! that's cute. Snagged from teh intertubes, somewhere. Let me know if you're the owner of this picture, no copyright infringement intended.)

Just A Smidge Of Election Coverage.

Yes, it was primary day yesterday all over the US of A, so here's a little recap:

In CA, it's Whitman against Brown for Governor and Fiorina against Boxer for Senate.

Also in CA Orly (birth certificate) Taitz lost her bid to run for Secretary of State.

In Nevada it will be Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (Democrat) v. Sharron Angle (Loony Wah Wah Tea Party Republican).

...and in Iowa Chuck Hurley (head of the Iowa Family Council) lost his bid for the house to Ako Abdul Samad. Hurley wanted to make this election all about destroying marriage equality. He hitched his wagon to a star... NOT!

JoeMyGod offers continuing, whimsical and right-on coverage, so give him a look-see.

Today in biblical certainty (via a response to Dr. Laura Schlessinger). I offer you the irrefutable, unambiguous word of God:

Leviticus 11:6-8  "God Hates Football."

Look it up if you're confused.

See There, Now Nobody Is Happy. WH mad at BP mad at critics mad at BP mad at WH. Or something like that. ...and still the oil gushes into the gulf.

How Nice. Obama to meet with GOP for lunch today. The Washington Post quotes an Obama aid: "They'll be nice."

It's A Deal... Maybe. Language to hammer out DADT repeal might make it into defense spending bill.

Phew! More than half the People in American today consider me "morally acceptable." Only 42% want to throw me in jail. I wish I had an international coffee to celebrate this moment.

BP Sucks. BP sucking up 1,000 barrels of oil per day and will "try" to stop the leak later this week.

2 Billion, with a "B". Youtube now gets double the daily hits than all the people who tune in to the 3 major US networks every day combined.

Only her hairdresser knows for sure. Folks keep askin' about Kagan. Maureen Dowd imagines her in a "...lacy peach peignoir..." That ought to settle things.

Sestak v. Burns. Burns flogs Sestak's (former) republican status, makes headway.

Utah? Kids are coming out younger, even in... Utah?

Making The World Safe For Straight People, One Funeral At A Time. Via JMG: Minnesota Governor Tim Pawlenty (R) has vetoed a bill that would have granted domestic partners the right to make burial decision for deceased spouses.

(Pawlenty) also said that a “surviving domestic partner” should not be “afforded the same legal recognition” as a spouse. “Marriage — as defined as between a man and a woman — should remain elevated in our society at a special level, as it traditionally has been,” said Pawlenty in his veto message. “I oppose efforts to treat domestic relationships as the equivalent of traditional marriage.”
Don't worry everyone. There's no such thing as homophobia so we can all go back to bed.

EVERYTHING IS TERRIBLE!

A recent post over at Joe.My.God got me thinking about a sensational website that always makes me laugh.

Brace yourselves for:

Everything is Terrible!

Where else can you see a 2 1/2 minute version of the 1997 classic film, "Little Bigfoot?"

I didn't even know there was a movie called "Supervan."

Everything is Terrible! proves that a brain-damaged person with a VHS fetish can accomplish miracles.

If you really need to hurl, here's 1 minute & 2 seconds of "Dolphin Wedding."

Totally safe for work, but you will never be able to wash it from your brain.

"Come on girl, it's time!"

Republican Hilarity Special Edition

Joe My God Reports that right wing nutcases have been effective at scaring other right wingers into not cooperating with the census. So much so that the census is in danger of undercounting all the right wing nuts in the country. Way to go Michelle Bachman!

John McCain was never, ever, ever a maverick. Do you hear me?  Never!

The family values party is a bit embarrassed about paying for that whole lesbian, bondage club thing, leading to RNC Chief of Staff Ken McKay's resignation

Morning News 4/01/10

Happy April everyone!

No more firings under DADT!? Joe My God has a nice summary of this morning's announcement by Sec. of the Army John McHugh. Apparently, it is easier to talk to gay soldiers about the effects of DADT when they don't have to be afraid of being fired under DADT for talking about the effects of being gay under the policy. (Do you follow me?)

Well, I live in the White House with my wife, two daughters and my mother-in-law. President Obama fills out his census form on Census Day.

Google changes name to "Topeka" (in honor of April Fool's Day) proposes a "text-only" version of Youtube.

Constance McMillen will be able to attend the private prom in a tux with her girlfriend.

Statement from Get Equal's Robin McGehee: Time for Action

(Via Joe My God)

In the spirit of being calm and reasonable, here are some words from a woman who got arrested yesterday for civil disobedience:

I am glad to see us Queerfolk getting nice n' uppity.

If we're going to be disobedient, we might as well be civil.

N'est pas?
